Bordeaux to cut number of chateaux names

In an attempt to simplify Bordeaux wines for the consumer, estates are being told to stop using several different chateau names for the same wine, bottled at the same property. Although there are around 7,000 winemakers in the region, there are over 12,000 chateaux names, which authorities hope to reduce to under 10,000.

Tasting Highlights: Crozes-Hermitage

The Northern Rhône's Crozes-Hermitage appellation is large and sprawling, covering more than 3,000 acres of vines on both hillsides and flat plateaus. The soils here, which are composed of large rolled stones and alluvial clays, produce rich, dark-fruited wines backed by a strong ironlike note. But it's a difficult appellation to get a handle on because wine quality can be inconsistent.

Moet fined €30,000 for Champagne ads

Moet & Chandon has been fined €30,000 for contravening a French law declaring that alcohol advertising “must only consist of objective information and cannot contain any show or performance.” Moet's La Nuit en Rose publicity campaign was condemned for creating an association between drinking pink Champagne and leading 'la vie en rose' (a wonderful life), referencing the iconic Edith Piaf song.
