In France's Cathar Country, A Fortress Around Every Turn

Open Skies Treaty Goes into Effect

An EU-US deal liberalising the airlines market coming into force this weekend is expected to result in better choice for passengers and cheaper airfares. The 'Open Skies' deal -- starting Sunday (30 March 2008) -- ends most of the restrictions on airlines from the US and the EU operating between the two continents. US airlines will now be free to fly both to airports in the European Union and from there to third destinations while European airlines will be able to fly to US airports and then on to other destinations.

France train fares to rise

The TGV, France’s super-fast train, may soon become super-expensive. That’s because the French rail network is looking to increase the tolls on the rail lines as much as 80% by 2015. the French rail company SNCF worries that if it has to raise TGV fares too much they will fare badly against their competitors, notably air travel.

New top for the Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is to be reshaped, altering the skyline of Paris, in time for the structure's 120th anniversary next year, the Société d'exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (Sete) has just announced. Serero Architects of Paris has won the competition to redesign the structure's public viewing platform and reception areas. The design is already causing controversy, with critics questioning the wisdom of tinkering with the famous silhouette and spending money on upgrading a tourist attraction which attracts 6.9 million visitors a year.

Air France-KLM buys Alitalia for a song

Air France-KLM purchased 100% of troubled Italian airline Alitalia for 10 euro cents per share of stock, solidifying Air France’s number one position in Europe. In the deal, which is being condemned by some Italian press as highway robbery, one share of Air France was equal to 160 shares of Alitalia, effectively dropping the value of Alitalia stock by over 80% in one day. The government of Italy had been subsidizing the money-losing Alitalia airline for over 15 years, injecting some 4.3 billion euros (over $6 billion today) into the company.

France sees sunniest winter in almost 60 years

The winter of 2007-2008 in France has been the sunniest since 1950, says a report published Friday by Météo France, the official French weather service. Good news for vintners. Bad news for truffle farmers. Snowfall was also down in France, particularly in the Pyrenees mountains. The Alps were not as hard hit, good news for ski tourism there.

France places 10th after Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Australia, Spain, United Kingdom, United States, Sweden, and Canada in the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2008. France benefits from its rich cultural resources, ground and air transport infrastructure but scores badly in price competitiveness, affinity for travel and tourism, availability of qualified labor, and safety and security (54th).
