French prison for hotel conversion

As part of its programme to sell off unused state property, France's
finance ministry has put on sale the medieval Sainte-Anne prison in the
centre of the southern town of Avignon, one of the country's most
popular tourist destinations. The only condition is that all or part
must be turned into a top-class hotel with at least 110 rooms.Asking
price is around four million euros (5.9 million dollars).

One in four French hotels are in a state of disrepair and 24 per cent
of customers complain of rude or incompetent service, according to
France’s Committee for Modernisation of the French Hotel Trade. The
committee blamed falling profit margins, changing customer habits,
badly-paid staff and conservative management for the poor state of the
country's 18,000 officially-classified hotels, and called for their
urgent overhaul.

Strasbourg at Christmas

France, and a seasonal attack of trinketry visited by et 1.6 million
people last year. For food and coziness, Strasbourg remains the most

French meals such as lobes of foie gras under puff pastry hats, creamy

Air France Opens Huge Conract to Airbus and Boeing

Pitting France and America’s biggest aircraft manufacturers against
each other, the Air France-KLM Group will ask Airbus and The Boeing Co.
to submit competing tenders to build about 100 long-range aircraft with
a list price of about $20 billion. Air France will look at Airbus' A350
XWB and the competing 787 Dreamliner from Boeing. Bidding will begin
next year, with the contract awarded by 2009.

Eurostar reaches out to Americans

Rail Europe, which sells tickets in the United States for Eurostar's
high-speed train service between Paris and London, has a new
advertising campaign that it hopes will excite Americans enough about
Europe that they put aside any concerns about the dollar-euro exchange
rate. Eurostar's new service, which began last Wednesday, shaves 20
minutes off the travel time between Paris and London, to 2 hours and 15
minutes. To promote the service, Rail Europe has put up a Web site, www.getalittleparis.com.

France train services near normal

Travel networks in France are returning to normal following major
disruption caused by a nine-day strike. High-speed TGV services from
Paris are running as usual. In the capital, metro services were being
restored, though few lines were back to 100% operation.

Verbier ski resorts open with early snowfall

Last week the France ski resort of Verbier opened for weekend skiing -
and following further November snowfall it is now due to open many runs
for seven-day skiing ahead of schedule. Among the areas open for
snow-sport fans on snowboarding holidays and ski breaks are Lac des
Vaux, Attelas and La Chaux.

Obese passenger wins case against Air France

A Frenchman who weighs 375 pounds has won a court case against Air
France after it made him buy a second seat on a flight from New Delhi
to Paris. Jean-Jacques Jauffret, a 43-year-old screen-writer, said he
was deeply humiliated when airline staff measured his girth with
wrapping tape in front of other passengers at New Delhi airport. Air
France was ordered to pay 8,000 euros in damages and to reimburse the
cost of his second seat.

Air France KLM profit tops expectations

Air France KLM, the world's biggest airline by revenues, posted a
stronger-than-expected 28 percent jump in quarterly profit on Nov 22,
2007, lifting its shares by as much as 9.5 percent. Profits were
powered by strong demand, especially on longer routes, and by fuel
surcharges and hedging which buffered the airline from surging oil
prices.

Rail Sabotage Is Reported in France

Saboteurs staged a co-ordinated attack on France's high-speed rail
network early on Nov. 21, causing nationwide delays to services already
hit by an eight-day transport strike, the SNCF state railways said. A
senior SNCF executive blamed militant strikers for the damage and said
police were hunting those responsible.

London’s St Pancras Station Reopens for French Trains

Eurostar train travellers between France and Britain will now arrive
and depart from London’s St. Pancras station, following a three-year,
$1.7 billion government-and-privately financed restoration. Eurostar’s
new schedules post the time for nonstop trains from London to Paris at
two hours and 15 minutes, and to Brussels at one hour and 51 minutes.
The London-to-Paris round-trip fare ranges from $122 to $1,180.

Air France sues Ryanair for 'slanderous accusations'

Air France has filed a law suit against Ryanair, the Irish low-cost
airline, for damages following Ryanair’s launching proceedings with the
European Commission denouncing alleged price-fixing collusion between
Air France and two other European airlines.

Air France Inceases Fuel Surcharge

Air France will increase the fuel surcharge on all flights booked from
today (November 14, 2007). The airline has said that its surcharge will
increase by €2 per flight on routes to short and medium haul
destinations, while €10 will be added to each segment of long haul
routes.
